Karnataka is likely to have 10 more government medical colleges from 2013-14 academic year.
Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas on Friday announced that 10 new medical colleges in various districts had been proposed to function from next academic year, and the under-graduate and post-graduate seats in the existing medical colleges would be increased.

“Proposals have been prepared for new medical colleges in Tumkur, Madikeri, Koppal, Chitradurga, Gadag, Yadgir, Chikkodi, Chikballapur, Uttara Kannada and Chamarajanagar,” he said, and added that “the proposals will be sent to the Medical Council of India.”

Ramdas also said an inspection team had been sent from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to review the applicants. The proposals approved by the state had to be sent to the MCI before September 30, he added.

Ramdas announced that 600 MBBS seats and 250 MD seats would be added in the state from next academic year, and a proposal for this had been sent to the MCI. In nine medical colleges, MBBS seats had been enhanced, and PG seats would be enhanced in the medical colleges in Bidar, Mandya, Shimoga, Hubli, Belgaum and Raichur.

He said: “As many as 2,000 nurses and paramedical, teaching and allied staff have been recruited to get approval for new colleges.”

Rural Internship
The minister also said the government had agreed to permit medical students from the state’s medical colleges under all-India quota to continue compulsory rural internship anywhere in the country. Ramdas also said Karnataka would go ahead with the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for MBBS courses, for which preparations had started. “The Central Board for Secondary Education has issued the calendar of events for NEET 2013. Special coaching classes are being conducted for II PUC students and the state is prepared to go ahead with NEET this academic year,” Ramdas said.
